I am basing this information on Harry and Mary sharing 1031 cM in their DNA. If any of JH’s siblings were the parent of William, Mary and Harry would be 1C1R and share 141-851 cM
When you look at ancestry.com and the possibilities here is what they came up with.
99% 1st cousin – 553-1,225cM For this to be possible, John Charles would need to be William’s Father.
99% Great Grandparent/grandchild – Certainly not a possibility 464-1,446 cM
99% Great Uncle/niece – Certainly not a possibility 251-2,108 cM
99% Half uncle/niece – 500-1,446cM Very fitting for John Henry to be the father and William and Harry having different mothers.
1% grandparent/grandchild – 1156-2311cM
1% half sibling – 1,317-2,312 cM
1% Uncle/Niece – 1,349-2,175 cM
I also compared these numbers to a few different cM charts and records and the answer comes up the same every time. There are only two possibilities.
1. William is the child of John Charles making Mary and Harry cousins
2. William is the child of John Henry making Harry the half uncle to Mary
And this is where it gets sketchy, with all the DNA we have both are a possibility. So John Charles would have been a 55 year old man with 9 children and a wife when William was conceived. Or John Henry was a 23 year old single man.
I am still working on which one would be the likely father, but the numbers work for both of them. Hopefully soon I will have a definitive answer so this family know for sure their place in our family. No matter what they are very much loved by myself and Linda for sure. It would be nice if they had the chance to meet even more of the family, there are a few others Melodie has met. It’s very sad that Mary didn’t get to meet more family before she passed. She was such a beautifyl person and anyone would have been blessed knowing her, I certainly feel blessed with the short time I had with Mary.
This is not something that should be swept under the rug, it’s something to embrace. Our big family is even bigger, and it appears even bigger still with the news of another cousin amongst us to give me more numbers to figure out, numbers that aren’t quite making sense yet, but I have faith they will.]]>

Well I figured that why should one person be left with updating our family tree all the time and take the heat when there are errors. We can make our own errors and correct them too! If enough of us spread the word amongst our families then we might just have one huge united family tree. We don't have to limit this to just the Smith's either, I for one will be adding my mom's side of the family as much as I can find out on it. You will notice that the information on the Stanburys from The Smith Family Odyssey by Dorothy and Charles has been included here, so we are not limited. Everyone is welcome to add their other parent too, just click on your other parent (when they have been added) and add their mother and father. I will try and get a tutorial out there quickly on how to update this. Once the tutorial is out, or if you figure this out before that, you are welcome to add your non-Smith born parent\'s family if you wish. The tree is nearly complete, Linda and I have been working on the John Henry Smith line November 17 & 18 and the rest of the tree was completed by me on November 15th to 17th I believe. If you spot any errors you are welcome to change them if you can figure it out or let me know by email, maggymail@shaw.ca and I will make any changes. We do have a few questions on some parts to complete this 100% other than changes that each of us can make to our own sections of the family tree.
